Today, Monday April 15th 2013, Oakville Town Council will approve a massive salary increase for the Oakville Hydro Board of Directors.

The salary increase varies by position, but ranges between $8,100 and $12,400 per year.

However, in the new remuneration model, members of the Board of Directors will no longer receive the $300 per meeting stipend that they were entitled to in 2010. The following table displays the increase with the $300 per meeting included in the overall salary.

Title 2010 Remuneration 2013 Remuneration $ Increase % Increase
Board Chair $16,600 $26,600 $10,000 60.24%
Board Committee Chairs $10,600 $18,600 $8,000 75.47%
Directors $8,900 $14,600 $5,700 64.04%

While Mayor Rob Burton is a member of the Board of Directors, he is not eligible for any remuneration for his role on the Board.

In 2011, Oakville Council voted to reduce the number of members on the Board of Directors from 12 to 9. The overall savings was estimated at $26,000 per year.

With the current increase, it is costing Oakville residents more for 9 members on the Board than it did with 12.

This salary increase is not the only controversy Oakville Hydro has seen in the recent years. The reduction in the size of the Board of Directors resulted in the termination of Larry Scott, a former Progressive Conservative candidate, and Keith Bird, Councillor for Ward 3.

Both were known for questioning the Board of Directors upon the revelation that Oakville Hydro donated over $17,000 to the Ontario Liberal Party.
